July 2024 Update - We are pleased to share that we will now offer this as a permanent benefit for IPs moving forward.
We’ve heard your frustrations around getting subtitles added in more languages to your UB courses in the Idea Exchange, the IP Hub, and via email to our team.
Currently, auto-generated subtitles are created for any Udemy course that is created/spoken in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, or Portuguese, after the course receives 20 or more enrollments on the marketplace. The auto-generated subtitles are only created in the language that the course is taught in.
Some Udemy courses do have auto-generated subtitles in additional languages. There are two reasons why this might occur, which are outlined in the graphic below.
If subtitle translations are added to any of your courses via these two request processes, you will see a notification in your instructor dashboard that looks like this:
The Instructor Partner Program is excited to offer a third request process channel exclusively for Instructor Partners to request subtitle translations be added to your Udemy Business courses (this is subject to change or stop as we assess cost and process effectiveness). See the graphic below for some additional insights into the current state of translated captions at Udemy.
We will support a limited number of subtitle translation requests (subject to budget / team capacity to process) from Instructor Partners every quarter.
Important Context on Our Capabilities:
- If 1 course has translated subtitles in 3 languages, that is counted as 3 subtitle translations. Please keep this in mind with the number of languages requested.
- We can only provide local-language subtitles for English courses at this time.
- We can provide subtitle translations in the following languages: Spanish, Portuguese, German, Italian, French, Indonesian, Polish, Turkish, Arabic, Dutch, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, and more.
- Please note that we do not add subtitles to practice tests or language learning courses.
Instructor Partners can submit requests here.
We will prioritize requests based on the following criteria:
- Top priority: Demonstrated learner demand. e.g. An Instructor Partner gets a message from a learner requesting subtitles in a language not currently enabled on an IP UB course.
- Secondary priority: An Instructor Partner has a series of related courses with different subtitle languages offered.
Review Process:
- Requests will be reviewed quarterly, and can take up to three months total to be: approved/denied, requested to internal teams, and generated.
- Instructor Partner requests are not guaranteed to be fulfilled.
- If we reach capacity with requests, this Hub post will be updated and the form will temporarily close.
- If your request will not be fulfilled, we can not guarantee a notification or a rationale for why the request has been denied.
- Please note that this process is being run by the Instructor Partner Program, not Instructor Support. Please do not send inquiries about the status of your request to instructorsupport@udemy .com
- Learn more about auto-generated subtitles here.
